This Program Area focuses on research, training and consultancy services related to Urban and Rural Development Studies, with extensive experience in planning, infrastructure development and sustainable urban management.
CED has good experience in urban planning, preparation of City Development Plans, GIS maps for cities and Panchayats, designs, estimates and master plans for solid waste and wastewater management, storm-water management and slum improvement programmes.
The Centre is also engaged in research and technology development in urban and rural development sectors, including Urban Heritage and Urban Environment Management studies to support Urban Local Bodies in planning and managing these sectors.

Being the Centre of Excellence of the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India in the area of Urban Development, CED provides technical and institutional support to Urban Local Bodies.
The Centre supports Urban Local Bodies in Solid Waste and Waste Water Management and undertakes action research and technology development as part of its Centre of Excellence activities.

Decades of Experience in Urban Environmental Management
CED managed the 300 MT capacity solid waste processing plants of Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi City Corporations from 2008 to 2012, demonstrating its practical experience in large-scale urban waste management and environmental infrastructure.
